About Us

BI Communications was established in 1982 as a reseller of cables and connectors to the data communication and other general industries.

In 1985 BI Communications moved to their existing premises in Basildon, Essex and expanded the operation to include the manufacture of Custom Cable Assemblies, TAD Thinwire Ports & Systems, and Wallplates for data connectors.

By 1989 BI Communications were able to purchase their premises, and several other units on the same industrial estate.

1990 & 1991 saw bumper sales for BI Communications as Thin Ethernet boomed within the industry as a standard for datacom wiring.

Due to the popularity of the manufactured items, BI Communications decided to appoint a UK sales manager in 1992, and business continued to go from strength to strength.

Over the next few years BI Communications developed their own in house test equipment for checking cable assemblies and wiring looms, and measuring cable length on drums during inventory management.

The CLT1 Cable Length Meter was launched in 1992 and became popular amongst customers as a tool for checking cable drums and boxes, prior to issuing for jobs, and during inventory management.

The CLT1 was upgraded in 1995 to include increased range capability and an internal library of standard communication cables, and was renamed the CLT2.

The CLT2 was also made capable of determining if the cable under test had a short or open circuit within its length, and soon became renowned as a low cost digital TDR Cable Fault Locator.

By 1995 Structured Wiring had become more popular and BI Communications began to get requests from their customers for instruments to test installed wiring and cable assemblies.

As a result of this customer demand the CT45 was developed, for checking installed network wiring and measuring cable length. It was also given a built in tone generator for cable tracing, and the ability to identify circuits using remote modules.

The QUINTEST followed quickly after and became an instant success amongst installers of structured wiring as a low cost unit able to quickly identify faults on installed network wiring to TIA568A/B and USOC standards.

In 1998 BI Communications was certified to BS EN ISO 9001 for their quality management systems and started working towards IIP (Investors In People), in order to attain World Class company status.

The CLT2 was again upgraded in 2000, increasing the size of the cable library, incorporate a tone generator for cable tracing, and enabling length to be displayed in feet & metres.

During 2000 BI Communications expanded its product portfolio to include the TX2000 TDR Cable Fault Locator, which was heralded as the smallest graphical TDR available, offering significant cost savings over existing competitive units.

At the beginning of 2001 BI Communications embarked on its current strategy of internationalisation of the business and expansion of the product range through the appointment of a new Sales & Marketing Director.

2001 Also saw the launch of a new professional range of products with the release of the TX2001 Graphical TDR/Toner and the LanCaster Structured Wiring Tester & Troubleshooter.

BI Communications was also awarded distribution rights to the AOIP Easylan Cat6 Certification Tester and the Teletronics range of General Telecom Test Instruments in 2001, and joined forces with TCTL to provide training to the industry.

Our forward mission is to supply High Quality, Low Cost, and Innovative Test Instruments to the worlds telecommunication and data communication industries.
